A Guitar Players Guide to Buying Their Next Electric Guitar

By Kyle Zoltowski

Live Rock concerts were the rage in the 80's and they drove countless kids to buy their 1st electric guitars. In this day and age, video games like Guitar Hero World Tour are having a similar effect.

The heart and soul of all heavy rock music does not just lie with the lyrics; it also lies with the electric guitar and the various sounds that it can produce. There are so many kids across the block who would give anything to play like Mark Knopfler, Kirk hammett, Angus Young etc. These men are not just some of the best guitarists of their times, they are legends.

Now if you are interested in discovering how to play the guitar then the first thing you will need to do is buy one. Normally people start with an acoustic guitar and graduate to the electric guitar. It is quite tedious for someone new to choose the appropriate guitar right off the bat since there are thousands of makes out there on the market. If you are getting an electric guitar then you'll also need to buy an amplifier, pick-ups, picks, a tuner, perhaps an effects unit etc.

Electric guitars are available in a vast array of colors and designs with the aerodynamic designs being one of the most popular. But hold back! Don't buy the 1st guitar you see. You need to look around and check out the various prices and models before you actually go and buy one. In actual fact, one of the better ways to choose a guitar is by the brand or by the style. Here is my take on the 4 basic styles:

Stratocaster (Better known as a 'Strat') - This certainly is a show stealer and has a typical style. The most famous is the red and white color combination, which was used all the time by Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits. The Stratocaster is from Fender and has a neck sturdily attached to the guitar's body. Apart from this, it has twin cutaway sides, 22 frets accompanied by a wammy arrangement and 3 single-coil pickups. Fender designed the first Strato in the early 50's. A few of the popular designs are:

* Fender Deluxe Strat: Approx $450 * Fender American Deluxe Stratocaster HSS Electric Guitar in Rosewood: Approx $1100 * Standard Stratocaster Electric in Maple: Approx $400 * Fender Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar: Approx $700 * Stratocaster Eric Johnson Signature model: Approx $1850

Telecaster (Better known as a 'Tele') - The Telecaster is another great guitar from Fenders. It is more than just another axe; it is a complete orchestra. It is a solid body guitar and comprises of 2 pick-ups. The first Telecaster was produced by Leo Fender in the 40's and has a single cutaway body. It doesn't have the tremolo bar but has 2 different single-coil pickups. Some of the popular Telecaster models include:

* American Tele HS: $900-$1250 * Standard Telecaster Electric Guitar: $350-$600 * Fender 63 Tele Relic Solid Body: $2650-$3100 * Fender 72 Telecaster Custom Guitar: $750-$850

Les Paul - This extraordinary electric guitar was designed by Gibson for some of the stars of the era. The striking feature of a Gibson Les Paul electric is its set neck, which means there are no bolts. The body is a single cutaway. It is equipped with dual humbucker pickups as well as a scratch-plate. If you want to play twisted sound then the Les Paul will provide you with a huge range. Some of the legends who use the Les Pauls include Stevie Ray Vaughan and Slash (ex-Guns'n'Roses). Some of the renowned Les Paul models include:

* Les Paul Custom Electric Guitar: $3000-$3550 * 1959 Les Paul Standard Electric: $5500-$6050 * Les Paul Vintage Mahogany Electric: $750-$850 * Les Paul Classic Guitar: $1850-$1950

The Gibson Brand - Gibson is one of the powerhouse brands in guitar and all their models are classics and cannot be compared to any others. Gibson guitar company was actually incorporated in 1902 by Orville Gibson and has been accountable for providing musicians some of the best guitars. A couple of the famous models include the arch-top Gibson L5 model and the Explorer etc. Some of the well known shredders who have played a Gibson include Jimmy Page and Toni Iommi (Black Sabbath) to name just a couple. Some of the popular Gibson models include:

* Gibson Flying V Electric: $500-$600 * SG 61 Classic: $1500-$1600 * Faded SG Special: $550-$600 * Explorer Pro Electric: $1100-$1200

These are some of the best brands of electric guitars. The other aspects that will help you to pick up a guitar include the shape of the fretboard, the quality of the pick-ups, and the body shape. Full-bodied electrics are normally favored as they can produce some of the best noises that you will ever get to hear. - 18418
