The Abyss: A submarine has sunk. A nearby oil rig crew is sent down to rescue the sub if possible. Once down there they find that this in no normal situation. This film stars Ed Harris, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Michael Biehn, and Leo Burmester. (1989 Sci-Fi)
Night of the Generals: A WW2 whodunit, movie has potential although gets lost in gloomy script, and inanimate behaviors. It is simply a dud. Cast includes Peter O'Toole, Omar Sharif, Tom Courtenay, Donald Pleasence, Joanna Pettet, and Christopher Plummer. (148 minutes, 1967)
It Takes 2: Surprisingly well-wrought comedy for babies in reference to look-alikes who trade places in request to help each other. The fabulously prosperous gal has a dad who's getting ready to wed a patently terrible lady, when the orphan is getting ready to lose her best buddy, the communal employee who watches the orphanage. The doubles give extremely likable performances, as do their adult costars. Cast includes Kirstie Alley, Steve Guttenberg, Mary-Kate Olsen, Ashley Olsen, Philip Bosco, Desmond Roberts, Ernie Grunwald, and Lawrence Dane. (101 minutes, 1995)
Ghost: Encountering a thief in a dark alley, Sam is shot and killed. In the form of a ghost Sam stays close to the love of his life, Mary. He is unable to communicate with her, but watches her live on. He soon realizes that his death was no accident, and that Mary is now in danger. He uses a fake psychic to communicate with Mary and try to save her life.
AL Capone: Excellent newer-night gangster biography with Steiger ranting as Scar-faced Capone; excellent aiding cast, bringing back the nostalgia of Cagney-Robinson-Bogart films of the '30s. Cast includes Pole Steiger, Fay Spain, James Gregory, Martin Balsam, Nehemiah Persoff, and Mervyn Vye. (105 minutes, 1959)
Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story: This film is a biography of the life of martial arts superstar, turned actor, Bruce Lee. We follow his life from childhood in Hong Kong, filled with demons, to his exodus to the US, as suggested by his father. In the US he opens a martial arts school, and pursues an acting career.
Hang-Up: Disheartening black-oriented action-flick in regards to a medication racket; Hathaway has finished numerous fine films, although this, his last, isn't one. Bey is excellent as a doomed prostitute. Cast includes William Elliott, Marki Bey, Cliff Potts, Michael Lerner, and Timothy Blake. (74 minutes, 1994)
Big Trouble: Harried coverage sales associate Arkin needs money to send his 3 sons through Yale, so he gets to be engaged with ditsy D'Angelo in a plot to slaughter her loony spouse (Falk). This is pretty stupid stuff, albeit the sardine-flavored liqueur does grant a few giggles. Andrew Bergman wrote the script under the name Warren Bogle. Cast includes Peter Falk, Alan Arkin, Beverly D'Angelo, Charles Durning, Robert Pile, Paul Dooley, Valerie Curtin, and Richard Libertini. (93 minutes, 1985)
Patriot Games: Retired CIA analyst Jack Ryan is vacationing in England when, by complete chance, he finds himself saving a significant member of the Royal Family from an assassination attempt. In the process Jack kills one of the key terrorists younger brothers. Now this faction of the IRA is out to get Jack and his family. Jack Ryan is now out of retirement.
