Scotland, Alternative Vacations
The country of Scotland has some of the most breathtaking scenery to be found in the U.K. making it an incredible vacation destination. The majority of tourists choose Edinburgh as their main destination, whereas a smaller number decide upon something a little different. The following looks at Scottish vacations and a variety of things to do while in Scotland. I also looks at the Wickerman Festival.
With such a diverse countryside the selection of activities is endless. Mountain climbing is highly popular, as are hill walking vacations. The most popular vacations are fishing or golf. With the country of Scotland being the home of the sport of golf it should not surprise you that that you are never too distant from at least one superb golf course. With the Rivers Spey, Tweed and Tay you can be sure of a superb time fishing. But what if you want a vacation with a difference?
More and more of families are making music festivals their yearly vacation. Even though nearly all music festivals are huge with the main aim of making money, you can discover a small number of music festivals geared towards families, such as the Wickerman Festival and Tartan Heart.
The Wickerman Festival is an yearly music and arts festival is held on farm land close to the village of Dundrennan in Dumfries & Galloway approximately 5m from the town of Kirkcudbright in Scotland. The event celebrates the cult classic film, "The Wicker Man" which features appearances by Edward Woodward, Sir Christopher Lee, Ingrid Pitt, Diane Cilento and Britt Ekland.
The very first Wickerman Festival took place in July two thousand and two and was put together by local guy, Sid Ambrose. With little experience of putting together a very large event it is surprising that it still exists, especially when you think about the current economic climate. The festival has changed each year and, like the film, has a cult following.
Wickerman is immensely family friendly it features numerous activities for children for example, a mountain biking trek, fairground rides, various workshops and face painting. This fact can be easily proven by searching Yahoo, Google and MSN for Wickerman Festival 2009 photos or alternatively pop along to the official Wickerman Festival Gallery.
Close to the festival site is the small village of Kirkudbright which was where many of the movies locations can be found including Harbour Cottage which was used for the bakery and High Street Gallery which was used for May Morrison's post office and sweetshop. You will discover that there are a large number of places worth visiting in Dumfries and Galloway and it is really worth having a short vacation here so that you may visit all of the attractions. Popular places in which to stay include Castle Douglas and Dumfries. Scottish bed and breakfast is always excellent and is also very affordable and far less expensive than staying in a hotel. - 18418
