Yoga Music For Meditation Series - The Word OM

By Mariah Claiere

LOGOS And OM

Everything in the universe originates from a primal vibration, in Christianity called the WORD. In Hinduism this concept is called OM. OM and the WORD are an expression of a universal principle, a vibration, a primordial sound which is the source of everything that exists.

This idea is touched upon by Pythagoras in his famous idea about the "Music of the Spheres". In this idea physical sound is but a mere reflection of the cosmic sound or LOGOS (as it is called in Greek).

Christianity And The Word

The power of the word is immense in the Christian tradition. By uttering words God creates the whole universe. "God said: Let there be light. And light came" (1st book of Moses). God says words and manifestation springs forth.

These words are sound emanations coming from a higher level of reality. We just call them words in our sphere of being. This symbolism is present in many spiritual/religious traditions where reality is created by vibration or sound.

OM And The Atom

The terminology and the organization of knowledge are completely different in the Upanishads and in modern physics, but besides this fact there are lots of similarities supporting the idea that OM is the original cosmic sound vibration and source. OM is a subtle audible sound- a vibration.

When we dive into the atom we discover that all matter is in a state of vibration. That vibrations come close to our perception of sound in its poetical quality of music, is expressed by the physicist Dr. Donald Hatch, who states that the universe is not made of matter, but music gives a modern equivalent to the idea of OM as the sound of creation.

Sound And Matter

We know that the solidity of matter is an illusion and that all matter consists of atoms, separated in enormous distances compared to their size. And that the atoms themselves are not at all solid, but consist of energy in movement.

The scientist Donald Andrews describes the universe as consisting of atoms which send out a main tone, which then combine in groups forming molecules which he poetically sees as being cosmic chords. All matter and forms can be seen as living entities comprised of chords with each their own complex sound.

OM In Everyday Life

The creation myths might not only be the story of how the world once was created, but could also be a symbolic description about the process of creation that is ongoing, and which each one of us is a part of. It is the creation and maintenance of each and every little atom and the realities we are creating with our minds and emotions. And it is going on right now, not in the eternal remote past! If we manage to be in accordance with life, we will be harmonious and happy.

Matter is created by cosmic sound, Matter is cosmic sound. Matter is OM, crystallized and made physical. The universe, the earth and we only exist because the Word is continuously brought forth. Remove the Word, and only the pure empty space " ananda (the creative void as described by the ancient yogis of India) - will be left. This is the original state of the universe before the creation.

OM As A Spiritual Practice

For an advanced practitioner of Yoga, OM is as real as the air that he breaths. Christian mystics have long known of the power of the WORD inside and around them and felt the ongoing emanation of the WORD in the continual creation processes around them.

Seen in this way we are all co-creators of the manifestation in each and every minute, by sending out the Word in the form of thoughts, wishes, emotions and speech. We make our own symphony and we are responsible to make this symphony harmonize with the cosmic symphony!

So be ever mindful of your each thought, wish, emotion and speech because you form your world with them! The power of the word is yours. - 18418
