Dietrich, in her last film appearance, pops in long enough to sing the title melody. Rome's vigorous performance gives lift to choppy film. Chisum: This film, based on actual events, is about the attempts of good ranchers like Wayne and Knowles to stop the takeover of Lincoln County, New Mexico, by the corrupt Tucker. One of few Wayne Westerns based on historical occurrences. Cast includes John Wayne, Geoffrey Deuel, Forrest Tucker, Christopher George, Ben Johnson, Patric Knowles, Lynda Night, and Richard Jaeckel. Black Rain: New York detectives Nick Conklin and Nick Vincent capture a killer who is part of the Japanese Mafia. Upon escorting him back to Japan, he escapes. With the assistance of the Tokyo police they try and track this killer down. They find themselves being pulled deep into the world of the Japanese Mafia.
China Nine Liberty 37: This is a mystifying Western in which railroad tycoons spare a gentleman from the gallows in trade for killing another gunfighter. The gunfighter's girl falls for the killer and helps do his evil work. Title refers to the signpost giving distance to 2 close-by towns. Cast includes Warren Oates, Fabio Testi, Jenny Agutter, and Sam Peckinpah. (102 minutes, 1978)
Michael Collins: Politically charged tale of Irish insurgent leader Collins (Neeson), who with charm, guts, and idealistic fervor leads the battle against British rule in Ireland. Dynamic and commanding first half gives way to more abstinent and unavoidable summarization, in which Collins is made an ambassador and negotiator, sowing the seeds of his own downfall. Neeson is phenomenal and works with a first-rate cast in this convincing, believable, and powerful period piece, beautifully filmed by Chris Menges.
