Often times, one hand is inferior to the other in terms of strength, endurance, and flexibility. In order to determine which hand falls short, it is important to slow down so that an accurate assessment can be made.

Most beginners will find that a weak wrist or uncoordinated left hand fingers are the main cause of most of their playing problems. It is this fact alone that prevents a lot of guitar players from becoming better.

Building left hand speed and endurance can be accomplished following five simple steps. These helpful suggestions to get your on your way to efficient left hand guitar playing are exercises using your first and third fingers.

*Beginning Guitar--Five step strategy for strengthening left hand fingers

Step 1 - Place finger number one behind the first fret on the first string, while placing the third finger behind the third fret on the second string. It is key that both fingers come down on the strings at the same time throughout this entire exercise. Now switch. First finger, first fret, second string . Third finger, third fret, first string.

Step 2 - Back to finger one, fret one, string one. But finger three moves up a string-finger three, fret three, string three. Switch finger one to string three staying on the same fret, and finger three to string one staying on the same fret.

Third step, Now you must place your 1st finger behind the 1st fret, 1st string and your 3rd finger behind the 3rd fret, 4th string. Now flick your fingers over as follows.. 1st finger behind the 1st fret, 4th string and 3rd finger behind 3rd fret, 1st string.

Step 4 -For this step place your left hand so your first finger is behind the first fret on the first string and your third finger is behind the third fret on the fifth string. Then, as before, swap your fingers so your first finger is behind the first fret on the fifth string and your third finger is behind the third fret on the first string.

The fifth and final step, place your 1st finger behind fret 1, string 1 and your 3rd finger behind the 3rd fret string 6. Now you flick your fingers again so the 1st finger is behind the 1st fret, 6th string and 3rd finger is behind the 3rd fret, 1st string.

For best results, go very s-l-o-w-l-y using your right hand fingers, not a pick, and concentrate on coordinating both hands.

You should partake in these exercises regularly, a few times a week and you shall soon see some improvements in your strength and control. - 18418
