Thriller: A Song By Song Review Of Michael Jackson's 1982 Breakthrough Album

By Sarah Jones

Track 1: "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" - So much greatness stuffed into one song. I love that such an over the top song opens the album, it definitely sets the mood in the perfect way.

Track 2: "Baby Be Mine" - An under appreciated song that keeps the boogie going after the outstanding opener.

Track 3: "The Girl Is Mine" - Paul McCartney joins Michael Jackson on this silly love song (that Michael wrote.) Yes, it's silly but it's still a nice little tune and I like the playful interaction between these two music legends.

Track 4: "Thriller" - This brilliant song was written by Rod Temperton (who also wrote the only two non singles on the album, "Baby Be Mine" & "The Lady In My Life") but it was Michael Jackson's incredible performance that makes the song so memorable. That and the amazing music video of course.

Track 5: "Beat It" - MJ's version of rock music includes a great Eddie Van Halen guitar solo that made this song the favorite Michael Jackson song for many rockers.

Track 6: "Billie Jean" - The last of four Michael Jackson written songs on Thriller (the first three were "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin', "The Girl Is Mine," & "Beat It.") This album not only established Michael Jackson as a pop superstar, it also established him as a great songwriter.

Track 7: "Human Nature" - My favorite ballad on Thriller. In fact it may be my favorite Michael Jackson ballad ever.

Track 8: "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)" - An irresistible song filled with pure energy. How can anyone listen to this song and not want to start dancing?

Track 9: "The Lady In My Life" - A somewhat boring song by Thriller standards I still think it has some elements that make it interesting and enjoyable. I like it when it gets a bit more "groovy." The first minute or so is a bit of a bore though. - 18418
