A Jumble Of Excellent Feature Film Reviews

By Helene Mccoy

It wasn't that long ago that a trip to the corner video shop was the most convenient way to get a movie. You can now save a trip to the video store and download movies right off the internet. Let's look at what you might find to watch using a movie download site.

The Crying Game: Remarkably primordial and adult tale with Rea as an IRA volunteer who helps seize a British cadet Whitaker only to befriend him and later become engaged with his lover. What starts as a thriller impulsively turns into a poignant and sarcastic love tale, with structure twirls that deepen the film's virtually dreamlike voltage. An exclusive, provocative film that author-controller Jordan lugs off with poetic comfort; he made an Oscar for his screenplay. Cast includes Stephen Rea, Miranda Richardson, Woodland Whitaker, Jim Broadbent, Ralph Brown, Adrian Dunbar, and Jay Davidson. (112 minutes, 1992)

Eye For An Eye: Karen McCann has just had her life shattered. A total stranger has broken into her home and murdered her daughter. In spite of certain guilt, the killer is set free due to legal technicalities. Her outrage turns to an obsession to see justice done. Just how far will she go to achieve this?

South of Heaven West of Hell: Normal Western plot line of redemption pits marshal Yoakam in a battle against his prior life among outlaws, led by Bible-toting patriarch Askew. Cast includes Dwight Yoakam, Vince Vaughn, Billy Bob Thornton, Bridget Fonda, Peter Fonda, Paul Reubens, Bud Cort, Bo Hopkins, Matt Clark, Noble Willingham, Scott Wilson, Luke Askew, Michael Jeter, Joe Ely, and Warren Zevon. (127 minutes, 2000)

Striptease: Erin Grant is a stripper at the Eager Beaver. She is trying to raise enough money to get her daughter back from her divorced jerk of a former husband. Things spin out of control for Erin when a corrupt congressman comes to the club and takes a liking to her.

Daring Game: This is not a poor venture tale of underwater master guess who. He is looking for spouse and baby girl of his prior lady friend. Cast includes Laslo Benedek, Lloyd Bridges, Nico Minardos, Michael Ansara, and Joan Blackman. (100 minutes, 1968)

Rocky V: Rocky has retired from boxing. A brain injury from his last fight makes continuing impossible. He becomes a trainer, and his first pupil, Tommy Gunn, leaves him because he won't move him up quick enough. After winning the title with another trainer, Tommy wants to fight Rocky to gain respect. Since Rocky isn't allowed in the ring, they will have to do it as a street fight.

The Day the Earth Caught Fire: Knowledgeable, sponging up sci-fi tirade of steady havoc that follows while atomic eruptions start the world corkscrewing toward the sun. Judd is the journalist who first cracks the tale, with the help of Munro whom he romances. Watch for Michael Caine as a cop prompting visitors! Cast includes Edward Judd, Janet Munro, Leo McKern, Michael Goodwin, and Bernard Braden. (99 minutes, 1961)

Edward: Trenchant if unnecessarily vicious adaptation of the Christopher Marlowe play, written in 1592, in reference to the demise of the frankly gay British queen who denies his empress for a man lover. Regardless of 14th century setting, some characters wear modern-day clothes, and film works relatively well as a condemnation of 20th century gay-slamming. Not for all tastes, however by no means boring. Lennox, previously of the Eurythmics, appears in one scene harmonizing Cole Porter's "Every Time We Affirm Farewell. Cast includes Steven Waddington, Kevin Collins, Andrew Tieman, John Lynch, Dudley Sutton, Tilda Swinton, Nigel Terry, and Annie Lennox. (91 minutes, 1991)

Muse Concert: Paper-slim although cute romantic comedy in reference to a cleaned-up '80s pop megastar (Permit) who's shown with a gigantic crack-getting to perform a primordial melody with a modern-day music megastar (Bennett) if he might only find a lyricist with whom he could work with. She appears in the doubtful individual of a ditzy lady who's assumed to take care of the plants in his N.Y.C. condo. Permit is at his best, throwing off a constant flow of ludicrous lines. (96 minutes, 2007)Cast includes Hugh Permit, Drew Barrymore, Brad Garrett, Kristen Johnston, Campbell Scott, and Haley Bennett.
