The Best Debuts in Indie Rock Since '08
After nearly a decade of prosperity, the indie music scene has shown no signs of letting up. Intelligent rock music is in, and the number of fans seems to be growing. The last two years have brought us an onslaught of new bands, and I'd like to discuss some of the finest debuts during this span.
While I could easily name 15 or 20 great debuts during the last two years, I'm only going to focus on three during this article. This will require a lot of thought, since so many albums are worthy of mention here.
Anyway, let's give this a whirl. If you haven't heard any of these albums for any reason, I'd recommend giving them a listen as soon as you possibly can.
If you never heard Bon Iver's debut, I'd definitely suggest checking it out. This is an album that consists of raw folk, packed with emotion. The simplicity of the music is beautiful, and many critics and fans agree.
This is an album that consists of some great songs from beginning to end. Standout tracks like "Flume", "Skinny Love", and others quickly became indie rock staples after the album was released.
If you haven't heard Vampire Weekend's self titled debut album, I'd suggest doing so right away. The release is over a year old at this point, but it's one of the best and most innovative albums I've heard in recent memory. This is a must listen if you're unfamiliar with the band's work.
Lastly, Fleet Foxes came out with a debut in 2008 that was exceptional. The best way to describe the band's music is a mix of bluegrass, indie rock, and barber shop quartet. I know that's hard to explain, but their rich melodies will pull you in on first listen.
These are all instant classics in my mind, and worthy of repeated listens. - 18418
