Top Tips on Xbox 360 Maintenance

By Jack Thompson

At almost $400 for the Modern Warfare 2 Limited Edition Elite Console and $300 for the Elite Console the Xbox 360 is indeed an investment in itself. When you factor in the cost of must-have accessories like the universal remote and the additional controllers as well as the games themselves, you are looking at an investment that can and will run in the hundreds of dollars.

However, during the excitement and enjoyment of the games, users often forget about proper maintenance of their Xbox 360. You may place it anywhere, bring it any which way, and just leave it be until you realize that the dreaded "ring of death" has manifested itself on your gaming console. By then, it will almost be too late to rectify the errors of your past ways.

Thankfully, it is really not all that difficult to keep your Xbox 360 in good shape with some preventative maintenance. You need to keep your console well protected from the three things which cause many systems to fail: dust, dirt and heat.

To counteract the damaging effects of overheating in the Xbox 360, you must ensure that you give it breaks after long hours of service in your gaming life. Often, even 30-minute breaks in-between 6-hour games are sufficient. You also need to position the Xbox 360 away from sources that generate heat like sunlight and heating vents as well as materials that trap heat like carpets and blankets.

Electronics like amplifiers are also sources of heat which can cause overheating in your Xbox 360; keep your console clear of these products. You should also avoid using your console while it is in an unventilated area such as a closed entertainment center. Your Xbox 360 needs adequate ventilation in order to disperse heat - the best places for using your Xbox are rooms where there is air conditioning or where you can position a fan to provide ventilation for your console. If you use external cooling accessories with your Xbox 360, make sure to power them from a wall outlet rather than using your console for power.

For dust problems, it is highly recommended that the Xbox 360 be positioned away from areas that generate plenty of dust. These can include constantly open windows and outside doors, even under the bed. (You will be surprised at how many users hide their units for one reason or another) And if you are not using the Xbox 360, it is a good idea to provide dust protection for it.

If you take your Xbox with you when traveling, you should get a carrying case for it which provides adequate padding and protection from dust and dirt as you carry it around.

As for dirt, always clean the area around the gaming console. You want it to be as clean as possible with as little dust and dirt as humanly possible. This way, you can delay the appearance of the "ring of death". This also applies to the discs used in the Xbox 360, which must also be kept away from dust and dirt by placing them in protective covers. Plus, don't smoke your cigarettes around the unit as smoke can damage the Xbox 360, too.

Indeed, when it comes to keeping your investment in the pricey Xbox 360, the most important thing is taking care of it like a diligent father would take care of his kids. - 18418

The History & Origins of Blues Guitar

By Zack Roberts

The blues is a kind of music that can be vocal, instrumental (blues guitar) or both. It uses the 'blue' notes which are accomplished on a 'minor pentatonic' scale most of the time, otherwise recognised as the blues scale.

Blues music was inferred from the African-American communities in the U.S. out of work songs, spiritual songs, field hollers, chants, shouts and elementary ballads that rhymed. A lot of facets of the blues are indicitive of African influence.

The call-and-response aspect of the music came straight from African origins and there were a lot of lines that would get duplicated thrice or more. This later developed into a line repeating twice and then on the third time around there would be an 'answer line'. You will be able to still discover these aspects of early blues in modern day music, especially hip-hop.

The term 'The Blues' refers to the 'blue devils' which signifies down spirits or sorrow.

The blues guitar brings a heavy role in blues music as well as popular music. It has shaped Jazz, Rhythm and Blues, Bluegrass and even heavy rock genres The original blues of the early 1900's, otherwise known as "poor man's blues" was commonly connected with hard times, oppressiveness from white folk, harshness of the police, gambling, economic depression, floods, magic, farming and dry periods. This music was fueled by a lot of brokenheartedness and anger. Typically a lost loved one or an general harsh surrounding inspired the lyrics and the tone of the blues guitar.

After the world war, you began to see blues songs that were about human relationships and sexuality. Also, wit was widened to the mix. Here is a funny example:

"That must be your woman, cause mine don't look like that... I said That must be your woman, cause mine don't look like that... Have you seen my baby? She's so big and fat..."

The blues guitar style came forth from the American South's instruments of the time which were the banjo and the Diddley Bow. This was a home-made one stringed instrument that was popular in the early 20th century. Figures such as Robert Johnson, Charley Patton, Son House and Blind Willie McTell were a part of the delta blues style which used a lot of finger picking styles and slide guitar innovations.

Eventually, after WWII 'electric blues' became progressively popular where the blues guitar was played on electric guitars as were the bass guitars. This was most prevalent in the Chicago area.

The history of blues guitar and poor man's blues is rich with culture and stories of good times and bad. I could go on for days about the history of the blues guitar but let's make this part 1 so you don't fall asleep on me! - 18418
