Violinists - Put Your Fingerings To The Test

By Clayton Haslop

If you take just about any passage of music in the violin repertoire and gather five players to play it, chances are you'll see five different fingerings being used.

This may not be the case, however, if the 5 players all came from the studio of one teacher.

Now, I consider that I have had four teachers in my life.

What is interesting, as I look back, is that two of them tended to have specific fingerings for any given passage, and sought to adjust my technique to accommodate them.

The other two took a very different route.

I studied with a very gifted Italian violinist in high school - Guido Mansuino. His theory was, if you couldn't play a passage with a given fingering after 3 honest attempts, it was time to find a new one.

Milstein was much the same way.

In the interim, however, I spent three years with Eudice Shapiro at the USC School of Music. Now Shapiro was a truly extraordinary violinist, one of the finest of the 20th century, in fact. Yet I would still place her firmly in the school of 'adaptive technique', where fingerings were concerned.

And I must admit to having chaffed at the bit on this point whilst under her guidance.

It was only when I arrived at Milstein's door that I again began to really feel the adventure of musical exploration and of personal innovation.

And fingerings were a big part of this agenda.

He himself was constantly looking for new and innovative ways of doing things - often playing different fingerings in successive performances. Milstein was unrivaled in his ability to pull this off.

In short order I found myself investigating three or more ways of fingering a passage before coming to one that allowed for the right musical impact as well as a fluid, facile execution for my hand.

It sure fired my imagination to do so.

Admittedly, there are times when your fingering options are limited - you really must rely solely on technique to get the job done.

Yet that is truly more rare than most violinists realize.

So if you run into a problem playing a passage, stand back and take a fresh look at those fingerings. Chances are, with a little investment of time, you'll surprise and delight yourself with a much more effective way of playing a passage that seemed impossible seconds before.

You will actually be SAVING time and effort in the bargain. - 18418

Scholarships For College In Music

By Mike Brown

Everyone knows that to get a job in today's society, one must go to college. But most parents do not have the money to send their kids to college. With the rising cost of college tuition, most parents no longer pay for their children's college education. Statistics show that once a child graduates from high school, parents no longer help pay the bill.

This is truly happening in almost any part of the world, and according to statistics, the number is increasing year after year. And this is probably why the government and other private organizations are looking for ways to give scholarships to capable students with limited financial resources.

Students have different talents. Some students are good in sports, others in computers, and others in the arts like dancing and music. More and more scholarships are now available that focus on a particular field of interest. If you really love music and are good at it, there are scholarships for college.

Music is extremely popular and many students are good in this area of study. Many parents convince their children to not choose a career in music because it is a very unstable career and few people really make a living at it. But in the end, it is the students choice alone about what they want to do with their future.

Here is a list of some of the music scholarships available for students:

1. A vocal scholarship is available from Bel Canto. The Bel Canto foundation awards over $15,000 to people between the ages of 20 and 37 who plan on pursuing a career in opera in the United States.

2. John Lennon program for BMI scholarship; this is a scholarship awarded to songwriters who are able to write original compositions. But you can only take advantage of this scholarship if you are invited.

3. The String Magazine Scholarship. This scholarship is open to any student who is currently enrolled in an undergraduate program. This scholarship is based on academic merit and financial need.

4. FAME scholarships. FAME scholarships are only awarded to college seniors who have been nominated for professional achievement.

You can find more musical scholarships on the Internet. Basically you need to Google music scholarships then go to the websites and see what the requirements are to qualify.

Almost any big university offers a form of scholarship, check with their registrar for scholarship information. There are universities in your local area, take time to visit them. It would be best if you make a list of the different college scholarships awarded to students with interest in music.

The field of music has fewer students than most other areas. Use this to your advantage. If you are majoring in music but are struggling with the financial burden of going to school, you need to start your scholarship search now. With less competition in the field of music, qualifying for a scholarship is easier than you might think so go and take the chance.

Do not be discouraged by the financial difficulties you are now facing. Most of us are either in, or have been in, financial hardship in our lives.

Financial constraints are not enough to stop you from getting that college education. Choose the best option available for you. This is your way to a dazzling career in the near future.

Your are a gifted and talented individual. Share those talents with the world. Do not give up. Show the world that your love of music transcends even financial difficulties. - 18418
