The Changes Of Types Of Electric Guitars

By Jake Zertosky

There are many different styles of electric guitars. The electric guitar is a very well recognized instrument in about all forms of music. In 1932, musician Gage Brewer performed one of the earliest documented performances with an electric guitar. The electric guitar influenced Hawaiian style music and Western style music in the early years. Though these styles were the first, they were not the only styles to use the electric guitar.

The next genre of music to start using the electric guitar was Jazz. What Gage Brewer did for the music industry, later on George Barnes did for Jazz music. George Barnes played jazz with a hallow guitar. Jazz evolved to Fusion Jazz by the nineteen seventies which was a turning point as guitarist started to use solid body instead.

It was not till the rock era that the electric guitar had evolved by creating distortions to the sound of the music that was played through the guitar. In 1967, Jimmy Page (The Yardbirds) and Led Zeppelin had created effects by using violin bows with the help of a delay and wah pedal. This has changed over the years by going digital.

If you are interested in purchasing an electric guitar, then you will want to know what kind of guitar it is you are looking for. There are several styles in which to choose from depending on what it is you want to play and how you want it to sound.

Typical of hardwood that has been drying out for 3-6 months, a solid body guitar would be cut into shape, coated with lacquer, and strung with steel strings. Another style of guitar similar to a solid body is is a string through body. This guitar has holes in the base of it where the strings are strung through it. The sound emitted from the pick-ups comes from the vibrations of the strings.

A semi-acoustic guitar, a lot like the solid body, but has a hallow body. Due to the hallow design, the semi-acoustic guitars pick ups uses the body vibration mixed with the electrical signal. A semi-acoustic guitar can have 1, 2, or no holes in it. These guitars also come in metal. The music that comes from this guitar does not come from the vibration of the strings directly rather it comes from body and the top of the guitar.

Mostly guitars are six strings. To get a guitar to have a wider range of pitches, you would need to go with one that has 7, 8, 9, 10, or 12 strings. There is a guitar that has a third bridge built into it. There is one guitar that allows you to combine these features. This is called a double neck guitar.

Like most hobbies, guitars are not immune to the cost. Looking through the Internet and local music shops will help you decide and hone in on a guitar. Once you have found one, then price one in your budget. As you may find, electric guitars can be very affordable or well out of your range. Some of the best deals out there could be found at a pawn shop, if you know what you are looking for. - 18418

Guitar Effects Pedals: A Buying Guide

By R. S. Rasnick

Guitar effects pedals have been on the scene since the 1960's when guitar-based music became frequent. An engineer named Roger Mayer is credited with devising the first guitar effects device, a "fuzz" box, that developed into the contemporary distortion and overdrive pedal, and the wah pedal.

Mayer's clients included such noted rock n' rollers as Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, and Jimi Hendrix. Supposedly, Mayer created the first effects pedal for his friend in the early 1960's. Now, incalculable effects pedals are used by guitarists every day.

Guitarists use effects pedals to give themselves a wider variety of sound choices to use during recording or live performances.

True, it's possible to use the guitar amplifier to modify these sounds, but most amplifiers do not have built-in effects and the settings would have to be changed from song-to-song. Usually, guitar players want to be able to affect their sounds during a song or in various sections as well, so it makes sense keeping the pedals in front of them so they can change it themselves.

So, just like the electric guitar and the amplifier offered guitar players a wider variety of tonal choices, effects pedals, too, give them even more choices in shaping their tone.

Today, even classical and acoustic guitarists use these effects, though they tend to avoid the distortion, overdrive, and wah pedals used by electric guitarists.

After effects pedals became common, rack-mounted effects saw more wide use among guitarists, especially during the 1980's. The Yamaha SPX-90 and Eventide Ultra Harmonizer were two of the most popular rack effects that guitarists used at this time.

Since rack gear requires a more advanced and time-consuming approach (not to mention considerably more money) than pedals, most guitar players prefer effects pedals for their simplicity and tweakability.

When they have their effects selected, most guitarists will mount their pedals on a pedalboard to facilitate transportation and storage of their effects. This system makes it much easier to trigger the pedals as well, since they are contained in a relatively modest space.

Volume and Wah pedals are usually mounted in such a way that facilitates their usage, since those pedals have to be "rocked" back and forth to affect their sound.

Most pedals, though, have an easy on-off feature. For instance, the ubiquitous distortion tone of hard rock and metal guitar players can be directly switched off and the guitar's "clean channel" allowed to be played, to give a different feel to different sections of a song. Another simple stomp, and the distorted tone comes roaring back.

Guitarists often spend a great deal of time fine-tuning their effects, amps, and guitars just to get the "perfect" sound that they've been looking for.

Popular effects devices include distortion, overdrive, chorus, flanger, echo, delay, vibrato, tremolo, flanging, and pitch-shifting, just to name a few. These effects can have drastic changes on a guitar player's sound.

If you are interested in expanding your sound or just trying something different, then you should give some of the above effects a try. Who knows? They may inspire your next killer solo! - 18418

From The Illegal To Legal In Mp3 Music Downloads

By Jonathan Hansen Denton

When you're trying to find information regarding free legal Mp3 music downloads it can get very hard to tell fact from fiction online. There is a lot of hype and plenty of cautious wording when a site displays itself for free downloads. While they may have very well tricked you into believing it was a legal site, your actions can still be held against you legally.

While there are a handful of free sites that are quite legitimate and are looking to profit through things like advertisers and other promotions, most are not. Any site offering free music downloads for free but offers a very limited song selection is likely not really legal. These sites are up and running one day and closed down the next.

Free sites that are virus laden are more interested in gaining access to personal information. While they may only charge 50 bucks to your credit card, if they charge 50 bucks to everyone's credit card they can walk away with thousands of dollars in stolen money.

Mp3 music downloads that you have to pay for are really not that expensive. While you're busy trying to figure out what is true and untrue about the site you could have been busy doing your thing through a completely legal site. Most competitive sites will offer you good music for a good deal.

Most of the music sites are not making a mint per download. You shouldn't have to pay more than one dollar when you download a song. Granted, for 300 songs you're looking at 300 bucks, but you have some added benefits when going through a paid site.

Paid sites are very good about making sure that your music purchases are cataloged and kept. This back up means that if you lose the drive you store the tunes on that you won't have to purchase every song over again. Instead, you can have the knowledge that you can access your record any time. - 18418

MP3 Players, An Introduction

By David Morris

It's easy to enjoy music with a digital MP3 player, or MP4 player as they are sometimes called. With a shuffle function you can listen to your songs in a random order, and fit your whole music library on a pocket sized player. Have you ever wondered where your music is stored?

Older MP3 players use a hard drive to store music files. Hard drives offer amazing amounts of memory for file storage. The iPod Classic has up to 160GB. However, players with hard drives are heavier, and have generally poorer battery life, as the hard drive has moving parts inside it, and requires more power to operate them.

It's increasingly common for MP3 players now to use flash memory rather than a hard drive, to store data. In fact there are only a few manufactures still using hard drives in their MP3 players, Archos and Apple are two well known examples.

Flash memory players have several advantages, they can be much smaller and lighter. Flash memory uses much less power than a hard drive, so batteries last longer. The player can also access your files more quickly from flash memory than from a hard drive.

Flash memory does have some disadvantages though. The storage capacity is significantly smaller than a hard drive, typically between 8GB - 16GB. The price for additional SD cards can be expensive.

Did you know that you use your MP3 player for more than just music. MP3 player now come with color screens. This means you can watch videos and movies, as well as look at pictures. Screen sizes vary, typical small sizes are 1.8 inch while the larger sizes can be 4.3 inch and 5 inch. Interestingly enough, Apple's Ipod Touch has a relatively modest 3.5" display. The bigger the screen the more you will enjoy watching movies, and the larger screens are often in 16:9 ratio too. - 18418
