Drum Samples: Kicks

By John Gellei

There are many different types of kick drum samples. Beat making is an activity that is so oft-repeated that using the same kick drums in every single beat is going to really drain your creativity. Because the kick especially is so ubiquitous in every type of music from rock to rap and hip hop to RnB, having a varied selection is absolutely essential. Knowing the types of kicks is the beginning, but is definitely essential.

A kick drum has a few different phases, like any sound wave. First we have the start or the attack, and this is really what cuts through any mix. If you can get a kick to have a sharp attack, it will be able to be heard through any number of surrounding and opposing layers of different sounds. An attack that does not have such a strong starting point will need to have two strong elements that follow - so it's necessary to really be careful about picking them. The starting phase can be augmented with other samples.

The sustained kick, which pertains to the second phase of the audio sample, is the sound that stays with you the longest, much more memorable than the initial attack. If you have a great attack, you can afford to have a weak mid-sound (or sustained sound), because we have heard that the kick is there, but it can't be both at the same time; if the attack is weak and there is no sustained sound, you don't have a kick, you have a melon.

If you want to adjust your kick's volume in proportion to the other drum samples, there are hundreds of ways available to you. Your main sequencer program probably has a few different places with volume controls, and even if it doesn't you can just as easily download a free plugin or program to help you achieve this goal. Most drum machines and software on Macs and PCs offers easy volume manipulation on both the main mixers and the additional nested devices, so check them out and read your manual.

If you do not wish to use any device or plug-in inside your host or hardware unit, you can certainly adjust the volume in any one of the editors (both free and paid-for versions) that are available. Most already have the functionality or offer different plug-ins to help you crop and adjust volume and fading. The free programs like Audacity are great and even match the professional edition programs in many departments.

Lastly, you should know that different programs include different drum samples. The libraries that ship with Reason and FL Studio, for example, are vastly different. They are both good, but if you find yourself making beats with the same drum samples over and over, look for some expansion packs or third party sounds to expand your choice, or modify the samples yourself if you have the time and skill. - 18418

Guitar Lessons For Relative Beginners - How To Play Some Cool Little Chord Changes

By Mike Jones

Mike here again from KillerGuitarTips.com

As promised here's another mini guitar lesson to give you a help in hand in your guitar playing.

Here, I'm going to show you a cool little chord change that shows up in many songs. It's really effective but it does assume you have some basic understanding of playing the guitar. You may find it a little too much at this point, if so, don't panic we have all been where you are right now. My full course covers every aspect of playing the guitar from absolute beginner through to great player all in the shortest possible time.

A great piece of advice is to keep all these tips for future reference. As you will be building an archive up over time and can be referred back to and pull out from your bag of tricks.

Ok, let's have a go:

We'll start by playing an 'A Major' chord in the open position, using your 1st, 2nd and 3rd finger play one bar all downstrokes and on the beat.

We now lift off your 3rd finger to reveal the open B string (the chord is called Asus2) and play one bar.

Now using your 4th finger try to hold down the B string at the 3rd fret (1st and 2nd finger remain unchanged at the second fret throughout this piece) and play one bar. This chord is named the Asus4 chord. Now to finish off play one bar of A Major to complete this four bar sequence.

Following on from above before I sign off for this week let's have a look at a cool little trick you can use to create cool sounding chords easily by using open strings within chords.

Ok follow me... We are going to play an A major (A) chord with a difference... The fingerings are: 4th string 7th fret with your 3rd finger....3rd string 6th fret 2nd finger and 2nd string 5th fret 1st finger and 1st string is played open this chord is an A major (A). OK now strum one bar....

Move this shape down two frets keeping the 1st string open and play a bar (G6)...

Now we need to play a Dsus2 chord. Here are the fingerings... 4th string open... 3rd string 2nd fret first finger... 2nd string 3rd fret 3rd finger and again 1st string open, now play one bar.

Now finish off by playing an A Major chord in the open position... 5th string open... 4th,3rd and 2nd string are played at the second fret with fingers 1,2,3 and the 1st string is ...you guessed it open.

Now if you want a great chord progression that sounds great on its own, play one or two bars of each chord numerous times. It's a great progression to solo over and superb for writing your own songs.

So, that's it for this week, keep practicing!

Warmest regards Mike - 18418

By Allen J. Howard

Freestyling has deep historical roots, and is a staple for the hip hop culture. Anyone who listens to hip hop music knows what it's like to hear two emcees battle it out with flow and lyrics. When you freestyle hip hop, you test your abilities and capability to create sick lines in an instant. With these 3 tips you will be able to freestyle hip hop better than ever!

1. Improve your skills by writing down your freestyles when you practice. Or better yet, try recording your freestyle practices. This works out great for a couple reasons. It allows you to hear the flow of great lines as well as to save what you freestyle in real time. By taking notes on what you freestyle, you will steadily expand your knowledge and have a reference book to check back on for inspiration.

2. Observe and report, or more simply said just use your surroundings. Rapping about what is around you can draw a crowd in your favor and make you seem genius, especially if you can tie up some really sick lines. It also reassures that you don't rely solely on your written material. You can also help to structure your freestyle a little easier by using your surroundings to "fill in" for you until your punch comes.

3. Remember that subtle qualities can set you apart from your opponent. Pay attention to your confidence, your enthusiasm, your charisma. Overall, how you appear to your crowd and opponent can make or break your credit and your freestyle. Sometimes simply touching your opponent during an emphasis can make the power behind your words much more meaningful.

These are just some of the most basic tips to get you guys started freestyling hip hop. There is no feeling better than knowing your freestyles are straight fire. - 18418

Do I need a Karaoke Amp?

By Jonathon Hardcastle

A karaoke amplifier is designed especially for karaoke machines; but you may wonder if you truly need one. While an amplifier can be designed for home use, most are for karaoke DJs. They have more features than a traditional public address system and they ease the process of setting up and taking down a karaoke setup.

These are all features that a professional karaoke DJ would like to have. Karaoke amplifiers are also commonly referred to as hybrids because they have the features that are also found on many pre-amps.

One feature in particular is multiple inputs, which enables you to get audio signals from more than one source. If you have an iPod and a karaoke machine, you no longer need a mixer because you can use your amplifier. Most also have a radio tuner.

A standard karaoke amplifier should be able to run at least four speakers effectively. As the general rule of thumb, a good setup includes two main speakers, a monitor speaker, and a subwoofer. Sound will get out to your audience when the subwoofer and main speakers work together.

The karaoke singer can hear themselves through the monitor speaker. The best karaoke amplifiers have a built-in crossover, which means that the low frequencies from the subwoofer will only go through that subwoofer; this helps to keep them separate from the mix. For the best results, run the main speakers and the monitor on the same channel because the higher frequencies do not need too much power.

You must match your amplifier to your speakers. Ensure the main speakers are able to handle more power than the amplifier, but it doesn't need to be too much more. For example, if you have an amplifier that can put out 300 watts, a speaker that can handle 450 watts is perfect.

If the amplifier is able to put out eight hundred watts, then an individual speaker must be able to handle one-thousand. However, when running that many watts, you will likely be running multiple speakers. In this case, you add the wattage of each together to determine how much they can handle. With eight hundred watts, you could run two five hundred watt (or even four hundred and fifty) speakers, or four two to three hundred watt speakers.

The flip side of this is buying a subwoofer that is rated for fifteen hundred watts and only running it off of a three hundred watt amplifier. You will likely burn out the amplifier and never get a good sound from the speaker because it needs more power than it is getting just to properly produce sound. - 18418
