Beginner Guitar Instructions: Acoustic Versus Electric Guitar Lessons

By Tommy Beltrani

It's quite interesting to notice how guitar students have often the same questions when starting to play the instrument. In almost two decades I had literally thousands of people asking me the same questions over and over again. What I often do nowadays I just predict the question and give the answer even before they ask, to their amusement off course. This is my chance to clarify a few important issue. By far the most common question is whether to start with electric or acoustic guitar lessons and my answer to that is always the same: Acoustic guitar! Let me tell you why:

Acoustic guitars are loud enough and you don't need any amps or pedals you would normally need if you play electric. That will save you quite a bit of money you could invest in online video tutorials or even a better instrument.

When you play acoustic guitar you don't need to worry about the many electric guitar techniques that might just be a huge distraction when you are starting out. You can focus on the basic techniques like chord changes, strumming and fingerpicking.

Playing songs sounds more authentic on acoustic guitar and it will definitely motivate you to play even more simply because it sounds so good.

Because there's no need for an amp, an acoustic guitar is much easier to carry around and use wherever you are: camps, school, friends house etc.

Starting on an acoustic guitar will strengthen your hands because it's a bit harder to press than on an electric guitar. This is a great way to lay down a good foundation.

Once clarify we should leave the electric guitar for a later stage, the next question is whether to buy a nylon or a steel string guitar. That is completely a personal choice as the two instruments have a completely different sound and are used in different music styles. If you like to play classical, flamenco, bossa nova or latino a nylon string is what you need while the steel string is common in more contemporary styles like pop, country and rock.

After you have been playing for a while and are comfortable playing song you can start considering getting yourself an electric guitar.

Learn to play guitar is a very fulfilling hobby and be reassured that the practice you put in will definitely pay off in due time. There's a certain level of practice required to see results, no matter what level you want to play at. So practice, practice, practice and remember at all times to have fun. - 18418

Parkway Drive Is In The Fast Lane To Success

By Georg Scheffer

From the laid back, beachfront town of Byron Bay, Australia, this band started in 2003 when they took the name of Parkway Drive, the name of the street where all the late night jam sessions used to took place as they practiced their favorite music.

The charismatic 5 band mates are anything but laid back. They have the ability to involve the crowd when they are playing their seriously hardcore metal music, even though they may have the deceiving look of a bunch of surfer boys. Their sound is among some of the heaviest metal, however.

This was released in August 2005 and the band revved up their notoriously frantic pace of performances and tours. Parkway Drive became a strong act as they performed for headlining shows around Australia and spread their wings to other countries as well. The touring has been the vehicle that they used to really crank up their fan base and visibility.

Parkway Drive's current band members

- Front man and vocals done by Winston McCall
- Percussion and Drums played by Ben Gordon
- Guitar played by Jeff Ling
- Guitar played by Luke Kilpatrick
- Bass Guitar played by "Pipey" O'Connor

Epitaph Records signed the group in June of 2006 and then released the album "Killing with a Smile" to American audiences in August. 2006 continued to be a time of enormous success as the group appeared on the Taste of Chaos Tour where they played with such favorites as Underoath, Taking Back Sunday, Thursday, and Saosin. Fans began demanding more Parkway Drive merch throughout the tour appearances. During the last 2 months of 2006, the group performed at the Homebake Festival, Soundwave Festival, Gravity G Festival, and Sound Fest.

2007 brought continued good fortune when they played at Underworld and treated the public to the first live performance of "The Siren's Song". Parkway Drive was the only Australian group to be asked to participate in the 2007 US Vans Warped Tour. Their album, "Horizons" was finally released in October of 2007 and scored a 10/10 from Blunt Magazine. This metal album went straight to #6 on the ARIA charts upon its release and stayed in the top 40 for weeks.

Music Highlights in Brief: Album Releases were: 2005 release of Killing with a Smile 2007 release of Horizons. Singles and Music Videos include: Boneyards

Parkway Drive merchadise sales, including tees, posters and hoodies are popular with fans of one of the newest heavy metal icons. The Beatles Second Record: With The Beatles (1963)

By Harold Donald Quesenberry

With The Beatles (1963) is not my favorite Beatles album, in fact it's likely their least good non Yellow Submarine LP. That is not to imply I don't like hearing this early album in it's 2009 remastered format nor is it to say that this album does not have any memorable songs on it because that's not the case.

I do think that when looking at only the eight Beatles originals on the album, it is likely the least inspiring collection of original songs the Fab Four ever put out on an album (the underrated Beatles For Sale has a far better collection of eight original songs in my opinion) on the other hand, the six covers on With The Beatles are quite nice (better than the six covers on Beatles For Sale.)

My favorite original songs to listen to on the With The Beatles Remastered CDs (mono or stereo) are the first three songs. Particularly, I've been enjoying song #2 "All I've Got To Do" in mono. It sounds delicious.

Another original song that has really been growing on me a bit is track #9, "Hold Me Tight." Paul McCartney wrote and sang this song and he's been very dismissive of it. And while the song is far from Paul's best work, I think it has a certain charm.

Among the cover songs I think "Till There Was You" is my favorite. It's a very cheesy sickly sweet love song and while I feel I shouldn't like it, I do anyway. The LP's last song, "Money" is an excellent way to end the record. When I listen close to the versions of this song included in remastered box sets I actually hear the song as much more unhinged than I realized. It rocks pretty darn hard.

For most of the CDs I do prefer the stereo versions(especially with the later albums which are my favorite, anyway) when it comes to the 2009 Beatles remasters but I do think that this CD sounds better in mono than in stereo. - 18418
