Think About an Archos MP3 Player Before Purchasing Your IPod

By Frank Froggatt

There is in all honesty just one real marketplace leader when it comes to portable media devices for music and videos, and that is undoubtedly the Apple iPod. Bearing that in mind, just because they have the principal market share doesn't connote that they are the only one with a quality product. There are a number of exceptional alternatives to the ubiquitous Apple brand that are equivalent not only in features but also in quality and cost. You can take the latest player from the Gen 5 line up of Archos MP3 players as a prime example of this, as for the price and quality of the device it gets my highest vote. In recent times I picked up the 80 GB 605 WiFi model, and without a doubt in my mind I am joyful I made this purchase and got rid of my iPod.

Archos MP3 players are separated from the rest of the pack by many characteristics. It of course plays music love all the rest of them, and with the 80 gigs of storage that I have, I've been able to put every song that I have onto the 605 WiFi with tons of room left over. Many digital file types are supported, including .mp3, .wav, and .wma (protected or not). It is a really nice feature because it means that I don't have to wait around for conversion software in order to download my songs. Features like this make it a much more versatile and convenient player than many other brands.

The Gen 5 line is much more than a simple music player though. Archos MP3 players have a superb 4.3-inch full-color touchscreen that can be activated with the touch of a finger or the included stylus, making navigation through the various menus a simple task. Because of the large size of the display on this unit, it makes it perfect for watching movies, TV shows or even streaming videos from YouTube. It yields an amazingly sharp picture that is visibly visible in all kinds of lighting. I only shake my head and feel sorry for people who try to watch movies on the tiny iPod display. Why put yourself through that when the bigger, better Archos MP3 players are available?

What I like most about Archos MP3 players is the way I can manage all of my contents without having to be tied to a computer. Because it has a easy WiFi connection, I can do all of my downloading on the go. Also, the integrated Opera web browser makes it easy for me to surf the Internet, check my email, and play games wherever I am -- something that's not possible with most other devices out there. With those other brands, you're basically stuck with whatever content is on the player already, and can't perform an update until the next time you're sitting in front of your PC.

If you're really considering the acquisition of a portable media player, stand out from the horde and make the investment into something that's a lot better than the name brand iPod. Instead, I recommend giving Gen 5 Archos MP3 players a try. They are a lot more scientifically advanced than all of their competition and they are cheaper. Panning with Drum Samples

By John Gellei

Sequencing drum samples is just about as important as ever in the music production scene, but one skill that is becoming ever more needed and valuable in the rap and hip hop scene is the ability to pan correctly. The reasons for this will become important soon.

In the mixing process, the technique of panning is second in line after adjusting volume. While it may seem hard at the start to some, it seems quite the easy deal to others. It all depends on how you like to work. In any case, it becomes much easier with time and experience.

At the very basics of panning is the philosophy of sound distribution. In essence it's about changing the volume of sound, but not evenly. The sound is distributed unevenly among the left and right channels, and this effectively changes the location of that particular sound in the stereo field. This can be done with drum samples, with a string section or an electric bell, the creative part is left up to you, the mixer. When used with drums, a complicated piece is easy to achieve with a bit of practice.

When panning drum samples, there are a few things to keep in mind. For instance, you should not pan the kick and drum samples beyond a percentile or two, and I will explain why very soon. An example panning board would see the snare and kick in the center while supporting drums like the hi-hat and cowbell would be panned to the left or right, and the amount would depend on each project.

Now, why on Earth would we want to not pan the kick and snare drum samples at all? The reason comes down to sound distribution. This mainly applies to clubs, but there are other instances where it could be a problem. Here it is: clubs often lay out their speakers among the floor not in pairs, but in channels. So all speakers playing the left channel of a song could be toward the front while the speakers playing the music in the other speaker are located in the back. What does this achieve? Well, that depends on the venue, but it sure does not tend to support our own music if we're panning the kick nearly all the way to the left side, and the snare to the right. One half of the venue wouldn't hear the other main sound just hear whatever is on their channel, like the kick or snare. That's why panning is best for supporting sounds and not the backbone of a song.

When drum samples occur more frequently than others, it can be good to try to pan the sounds out proportionally. What I mean by this is pan further to left for instruments and drums that don't occure often. Take the cymbal for example, it may only appear once every four bars. So why put it right in the center and stop something else from being there? You could put the hi-hat pattern which is much more regular in the center and pan the cymbal all the way to the right for example. - 18418

The following paragraphs contain some nice movie reviews. To find movie downloads do a search. You should try two or three searches, with terms like, "New Movie Download", "Download Movies Online", and "Top Movie Downloads".

La Prisonuiere: From the head of Diabolique comes this ambiguous, bewildered study of a female addicted to a photographer of sadomasochism. This film is truly a remarkably piece of art. Cast includes Laurent Terzieff, Bernard Fresson, Elsabeth Wiener, Danny Carrel, Dario Moreno, and Daniel Riviere. (104 minutes,'59)

Hold That Ghost: Prime Abott and Costello, with the boys inheriting a haunted house. This fine cast contains humorous Davis as virtuoso radio screamer. A highlight is the moving candle. Alias Jesse James: One of Hope's funniest films has him as an insurance sales associate out West, not the right job for a gunslinger. Fleming is a pleasant Western belle, and the 2 do a cute melody together. Cast includes Bob Hope, Rhonda Fleming, Wendell Corey, Jim Davis, and Gloria Talbott. (92 minutes,'59)

(109 minutes,'69)

No End in Sight: A masterful big screen production tantamount of the plethora novels that share on-the-record accounts from prior armed forces and covert operations outfits to clarify how the Bush management jumped before it looked in 2003 before invading Iraq. A standout in what is already a litany of Iraq conflict documentaries. (102 minutes, 2007)

The Best Debuts in Indie Rock Since '08

By Jonathan Park

After nearly a decade of prosperity, the indie music scene has shown no signs of letting up. Intelligent rock music is in, and the number of fans seems to be growing. The last two years have brought us an onslaught of new bands, and I'd like to discuss some of the finest debuts during this span.

While I could easily name 15 or 20 great debuts during the last two years, I'm only going to focus on three during this article. This will require a lot of thought, since so many albums are worthy of mention here.

Anyway, let's give this a whirl. If you haven't heard any of these albums for any reason, I'd recommend giving them a listen as soon as you possibly can.

If you never heard Bon Iver's debut, I'd definitely suggest checking it out. This is an album that consists of raw folk, packed with emotion. The simplicity of the music is beautiful, and many critics and fans agree.

This is an album that consists of some great songs from beginning to end. Standout tracks like "Flume", "Skinny Love", and others quickly became indie rock staples after the album was released.

If you haven't heard Vampire Weekend's self titled debut album, I'd suggest doing so right away. The release is over a year old at this point, but it's one of the best and most innovative albums I've heard in recent memory. This is a must listen if you're unfamiliar with the band's work.

Lastly, Fleet Foxes came out with a debut in 2008 that was exceptional. The best way to describe the band's music is a mix of bluegrass, indie rock, and barber shop quartet. I know that's hard to explain, but their rich melodies will pull you in on first listen.

These are all instant classics in my mind, and worthy of repeated listens. - 18418
